Kunming in Southern China. Bus on to Laos.It cost about AU$26 for the bus from Chongqing to Kunming and it is about 900km and takes about 12 hours.

I am unsure which route she took as the direct bus is about 18 hours but she said it took 38 for the trip to Vientiane.
